4 320x240 try 0 Lobstering in Maine Welcome to “Lobstering in Maine.

After losing my blog and all the information, I am in the process of getting some information back online.

The 2009 season is moving along and there has been no real big change from last year. Fuel is a little less expensive and bait is about the same. The price is even comparable to last year. Overall I believe I have caught a similar amount to last year so nothing really much different for me.

The only real difference this year has been the unusually cool wet weather. We are finally into our first what can be called a heat wave. I must say the warm weather is welcome although it has been quite uncomfortable working for the past few days. The plus side is that with the lack of any real breeze, it has been ideal hauling traps.

Lobster News Lines:  Connecting Maine Lobster Connections

Over the course of the past 30 years I’ve been in and out of the Maine Lobster Industry a few times, working on wharfs, buying, trucking, sterning and finally, fishing my own gear.  The one thing always puzzling me, is how loosely we’re all connected, never completely sure what’s going on up and down the coast, in Augusta and beyond.  On a monthly basis three fine publications: The Fisherman’s Voice, Coastal Fisheries News and the National Fisherman keep us informed, but Read the rest of this entry »

boat 300x203 Maine Lobster Boat Builders Hit By Bad Economy

This is a 35' willis Beal leaving the old Jonesboro Custom Finishing Shop

This is a picture of my boat as it was leaving the shop to be launched. The boat was launched in April of 2002.

It was built at the Jonesboro Custom Finish Shop.  The cabin is a cut down style from Wilbur Yachts, if my memory serves me correctly. I say “old boat shop” as they fairly recently built a new shop. The hull was laid up by RP Boat Shop. I am not sure, but I Read the rest of this entry »

A ghost trap is nothing but a trap that has been cut free of the line to the buoy that is said to keep on fishing or just holds the lobsters until they die.

I have been around lobstering all of my life and I don’t buy this theory.

I don’t buy this idea because I have retrieved ghost traps and sometimes they have lobsters in them and sometimes not. This is Read the rest of this entry »

145 320x240 g43097 0 Marketing Maine Lobster

F/V JENNY G

142 320x240 g13094 Marketing Maine Lobster Basically the problem as I see it is not marketing lobster so people will want it, its marketing lobster so people will believe it’s a good value. The hard part is giving consumers a good value and paying fisherman at least a reasonable price for their catch. Last fall consumers got a taste of retail lobster for under $4.00 lb and now they seem to expect it. Whenever the price starts to creep back up retail sales fall back down, which will continue to keep the price low.  Because dealers still need to move lobster. The thing is they still want to get there high mark-up on the lobster so it seems their solution is to pay fisherman ridiculously low prices for the catch. It works for the dealers and the consumers but not for the fisherman who are receiving prices that they haven’t seen for decades. Read the rest of this entry »
