A ghost trap is nothing but a trap that has been cut free of the line to the buoy that is said to keep on fishing or just holds the lobsters until they die.

I have been around lobstering all of my life and I don’t buy this theory.

I don’t buy this idea because I have retrieved ghost traps and sometimes they have lobsters in them and sometimes not. This is Read the rest of this entry »

Lobstering and crabbing in Maine in upper Penobscot Bay.

The above video was taken in Maine in the Penobscot Bay area. It is the person who is pictured below and shows his method of harvesting lobsters.

I put the videos on the site for those that don’t really know what lobstering is about.

[singlepic id=142 w=320 h=240 float=right]Basically the problem as I see it is not marketing lobster so people will want it, its marketing lobster so people will believe it’s a good value. The hard part is giving consumers a good value and paying fisherman at least a reasonable price for their catch. Last fall consumers got a taste of retail lobster for under $4.00 lb and now they seem to expect it. Whenever the price starts to creep back up retail sales fall back down, which will continue to keep the price low.  Because dealers still need to move lobster. The thing is they still want to get there high mark-up on the lobster so it seems their solution is to pay fisherman ridiculously low prices for the catch. It works for the dealers and the consumers but not for the fisherman who are receiving prices that they haven’t seen for decades. Read the rest of this entry »

The pictures here show the finishing off of my lobster boat built in 2002. It was done in one of the small boat shops.

This one was done at the Jonesboro Custom Finish Shop. I believe they are now out of business, but I do know how to contact them if you just let me know as it is possible, if someone is looking to have a boat built, they just might do it.

I do know their workmanship is as good as the other shops, and they are very reasonable. It would be worth a try if you are interested in getting a boat built, or possibly even repairs.

The pictures are some of the ones taken by myself and the shop during construction and not necessarily in order, however they do show the steps to completing a bare hull to the finished product.

Does anyone know of a good link to the lobster prices around the world?

I did hear a while ago that lobster is a “world market” I guess it goes along with the “world order” that Obama and most of the world want.

I assume the affect on Maine lobstermen is Read the rest of this entry »

I don’t know of an easy way to say that lobstermen, lobster fishermen, whatever you wish to call them are wanted.

Not for jobs, although this site is now getting traffic, so leave a comment if you are looking for a job on a lobster boat or are looking for a helper, one never knows and I do know that there are a few people that are now finding the site.

I do recommend Craigs List as I have seen a few sternman jobs there. My hope is that because the number of visitors to this site is increasing, that lobstermen, or just anyone will comment or post enough so that it becomes something of a source of information for Maine lobstermen.

The real reason I and the other members of this site are Read the rest of this entry »
