I noticed an ad where CVS Drugstore and Walgreen’s are open for business on Christmas day.
I believe I will upset many people, but I know I keep hearing how stores really shouldn’t be open on Sunday, let alone Christmas.
I personally believe this. I would also say that I think it might be nice if stores weren’t open on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving isn’t as important to me, but overall, I think many families enjoy it more than Christmas as it is a day, that even though a very luxurious meal is prepared, it is just for families to get together without all of the stress associated with shopping, gifts, and the like.
This quality time for families really is lost. I know a family can get together and go out to a restaurant to eat and this is good for many. Even though there seems to be a certain segment of society that seem to belittle the value of the family unit as it “was”, I believe most of us still believe our families are the most important things in our lives.
I know the business people of America want the stores open on Sunday as it generates revenue.
I see this as something, like many other things, that if the American people really didn’t want stores open on Sunday, they wouldn’t be open.
The Muslims and some other religious beliefs call Christians hypocrites and I don’t see how anyone that isn’t Muslim, agnostic, or atheist can say differently. If a Christian follows the Bible, then if I am correct, Sunday is a day of rest, therefore the stores should be closed.
There is no one to blame but the America people for them being open, not the government or anyone else because if Americans really didn’t want these businesses open, then they would not patronize them on Sunday. No business is going to stay open on Sunday if it isn’t an economical plus for them. I have heard many businessmen say, it just isn’t worth it to stay open on Sunday.
Well America, here is a golden opportunity to prove your Christianity and allow people to have Christmas off. The excuses that we forget and things of this nature so we need them open on Sunday is quite weak. I think anyone can get accustomed to planning for the stores to be closed on one day, especially when it is known well in advance such as stores being open on Sunday.
The real reason for this post is to mention Christmas. Why not test the theory and no one go to the store on Christmas. I see a great benefit for many people in that they can be with their families instead of working and it also might keep those that basically feel the need for some special thing that most likely could be gotten by without for one day.
Then we have the real reason according to many in modern society and that is, by staying away from stores on Sunday, we are going “green”. It would save energy. How many people would stay home on Sunday, if they didn’t go to the store to get something?
I would like to see this happen, just because it is time for the American people to show the government, just how much power they or we really have.
I say thank you for those that worked and are working on Christmas for providing access to things people need on that day. I say “bah humbug” to the businesses and business owners that are open for business, unless they offer every employee the day off, if they want it.
In an affluent country such as America where most people have the necessities of life, it really is sad that money and greed rule so much of our lives.
If people did this one thing and didn’t shop on Christmas, could it also be done for shopping on Sunday, then spread to other things so many Americans really don’t like?
Please feel free to comment!

You can never and should never force a store to stay closed on Sundays or holidays. Why would you want to?
Another point, I think the general busyness of most people in the US is the reason stores have needed to be open on days they didn’t used to be open. Think about it, the businesses are responding to a demand. They aren’t the cause of the demand.
America stands for one thing above all others and that is freedom. Individuals are free to choose to go shopping whenever they want. Businesses are free to be open whenever they want. Employees are free to work whenever they want (or find a new employer that won’t ask them to).
The Bible was written 2000ish years ago and a lot of what it says doesn’t make any sense or apply to the modern day. Exodus 21:7 says it’s OK to sell your daughter into slavery.
People of the Jewish faith celebrate Shabbat (their day of rest) on Saturday.
I wouldn’t say that money and greed rule our lives, I would say money is necessary to life. As with anything, you can get carried away.
“In an affluent country such as America where most people have the necessities of life, it really is sad that money and greed rule so much of our lives.”
It sounds like you are saying it is really sad that money and greed rule our lives because people have the necessities of life. How is that sad? Don’t you want people to have the necessities?
Be content that you have the freedom to not go shopping on Sunday, but don’t force that on others. People will do what they feel is best for themselves. America isn’t being destroyed by these changes, it is evolving.
I didn’t say “force” the stores to close on Sunday. I also said demand would dictate whether or not it would be profitable for them to stay open.
When you said,”As with anything, you can get carried away”, you effectively said just what I did, greed motivates getting carried away.
The evolving you talk about has taken a good amount of freedom.
The problem is one person’s definition of greed is often different from another person’s. Is greed having an LCD TV in your house? Two LCD TVs? Is it having a TV at all?
That is why everyone should be allowed to do what they want so long as it doesn’t effect anyone else doing what they want.
Compromise becomes necessary when you get things that overlap.
I think what is destroying our society is the lack of individual thought. Following other people’s ideas without first reflecting on them. Peaceful conflict and debate is a great thing.
