Most of us that go fishing for smelts on the Kennebec River and tributaries are aware that the smelts are running this time of year.

I went last night to Baker’s in I think Pittston and had over 4 gallons on a going tide. I think it is one of the first times I have ever gone that I actually didn’t bother to count how many I got.

I have some friends that took them so none were wasted which was a concern. I find it hard to go and not use what I catch but at the same time, it is extremely difficult to stop fishing when they are biting well.

With all the news about the ice jams on the Kennebec, I just wanted to let people know that even though Baker’s didn’t have all their shanty’s out, they had a few and are in the process of getting the rest onto the ice.

I can’t help but feel that it is the fact that the shanty’s were off the ice for a few days that my friend and I did so well, especially on a going tide, which I generally hate to fish. I have always done better on the coming, but this is the best I have done in decades of fishing for smelts.
